Diagnostics and Surgery - Burke Forest Veterinary Clinic - Springfield, VA

Surgery

Drs. Bowles, Hart, and Davis are all adept at surgical treatments.  Dr. Bowles, due to her internship and experience as an emergency veterinarian, has a great deal of surgical skill with both general surgery and emergency surgery including foreign body removal, bladder stone surgery, splenectomy, c-section, and other soft tissue surgeries.  At Burke Forest, your pet will receive attentive care before, during and after surgery. In most cases, your pet will go home the same day, and you will be sent home with detailed after-care instructions.  If your pet requires orthopedic surgery, we can refer you to one of several talented surgeons in our area.

Radiology

Radiographs can be a critical diagnostic tool. We use Digital Radiography, so no more waiting for the x-rays to develop! We take the x-ray that we want and in seconds it is digitally processed into our state of the art cloud based system. We also consult radiologists after taking x-rays to help further diagnose your pets.

Dentistry

Dental care is just as important for our pets as it is humans. Food particles and bacteria on teeth form tartar, which then causes gum infection. Over time, bacteria from infected gums can spread throughout your pet’s body, affecting vital organs such as the heart and kidneys.

We take full mouth digital radiographs, showing underneath the gumline, to precisely evaluate the pet's teeth. We use an ultrasonic scaling machine to remove tartar and then a polisher to remove any fine scratches which may have developed. If teeth are damaged or the periodontal disease is severe, we recommend thorough treatments including extractions.  We understand owner's emotional decision when deciding to extract teeth; however, your pet will be more comfortable following the procedure when it is necessary.  We will prescribe antibiotics or pain medications when appropriate. In most cases dental procedures improve the quality of life for your pet.

Diagnostic testing

With our in-house blood machines, we can run a reference laboratory quality test on a small blood sample. This takes about 20 minutes, which helps minimize stress on your pet, while greatly speeding up the diagnostic process.  When more testing is required, we offer a full service reference laboratory with twice daily pick up to increase the speed with which we get important results.

Pain Management

Pain Management is a top priority at Burke Forest. Our doctors will advise you about pain relief for your pet, and how to maintain your pet's good quality of life.  Pain relief can be in the form of medication, physical therapy, or alternative treatments. We work very hard to stay updated with the latest advances in companion animal pain management.

Currently we offer class 4 laser therapy.

Euthanasia

Euthanasia, or putting a pet to sleep, is a very personal and difficult decision.  Our doctors are here to help guide you through your family's wishes for your pet.  We offer in clinic as well as home euthanasia services on a case to case basis.  If scheduled in advance, a doctor and an assistant may be able to come to your home to offer your pet a peaceful, respectful passing.  We work with a cremation service that can return your pet's ashes in a decorative urn.  We know the passing of a pet is never easy, and we are here to support you through the entire process.

If you're having trouble deciding if it is time, here is a link to a scale that we recommend your family fill out separately and can discuss with our doctors: HHMMM scale
